With many of our products being fitted to both the external and internal faces of outward opening doors, we are often asked for information regarding a products resistance to the elements, and in particular, corrosion. Test data relating to corrosion resistance may already be available for some of the specialist door hardware we distribute, especially the CE marked items, but for a lot of products it’s not. Although not an essential characteristic for most items, we at Zero like to have the answer! Therefore, across a wide range of products, we have carried out some independent Corrosion Resistance testing to BS EN 1670:2007 at a UKAS accredited laboratory. BS EN 1670:2007 specifies the requirements for the corrosion resistance of building hardware for doors, windows, shutters and curtain walling. It provides a method of classification of corrosion resistance of building hardware based on its performance in a neutral salt spray test. BS EN 1670:2007 is the standard used for corrosion resistance testing in many harmonised European door hardware standards such as BS EN 1125 and BS EN 12209 for instance. Briefly, testing involves placing products in a chamber ready to be sprayed with a salt water solution for a set number of hours. We decided to test for Grade 4 corrosion resistance, which is a 240 hour duration test, and classified as Very High Corrosion Resistance. We opted for Grade 4 as it is rarely tested to for door hardware with Grade 3 (96 hours) seeming to be the norm. We are pleased to advise that the following products were successfully tested to Grade 4; Outside Access Devices for panic & emergency exit hardware, surface mounted Door Stays, Door Stops, Lever Handles, Escutcheons, Pull Handles, Cylinder Pulls, Door Viewers, Gate Fittings, Vision Frames both square and circular, Door Louvres, Door Loops both surface mounted and concealed, Flush Bolts, Thresholds, Automatic Door Bottoms, Frame Seals, Rain Deflectors, Brush Strips, Door Selectors and Finger Protection. We believe having such a broad scope of products tested to Grade 4 will enable them to be specified and used with confidence in general external situations. Please contact us for details on exact products tested, and equally a full test report is available on request.

We at Zero Seal Systems are delighted to announce we have recently achieved ISO 9001:2015. The 2015 revision of ISO 9001 is less prescriptive than its predecessor, focusing instead on performance. This was achieved by combining the process approach with risk-based thinking, and employing the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle at all levels in the organisation. ISO 9001 is the world’s most recognised quality management standard and helps us manage quality across all our operations by means of a Quality Management System (QMS). Jim Craik, Zero’s QMS manager, says “ISO 9001 has been a huge benefit to our business since we originally achieved accreditation back in February 2015, both internally by assisting our existing systems and externally by providing a managed QMS system our customers can see. We were really keen to meet the requirements of the 2015 revision as we believe the new risk based thinking approach will further enhance our all-round service levels”. Although it wasn’t required for us to achieve the 2015 version of ISO 9001 until September 2018, we have been working on achieving this revision for the last year to be able to achieve it as early as possible. If you require further information regarding our ISO 9001 QMS policy, please give Jim a call on 01785 282910.

In recently undertaken independent laboratory Anti-Slip testing, our Modular Thresholds, 6.4mm Low Flat Thresholds and Traction Tread™ Thresholds achieved a ‘low risk’ classification too BS 7976-2. We are pleased to report that every Zero threshold tested received a 'low risk' (lowest possible) classification (36+ PTV) in dry conditions, with the majority of those thresholds tested also receiving this classification in wet conditions. Test evidence in regards to the slip rating of thresholds is regularly asked for in public transport applications. Testing covered Zero’s wide range of Modular Thresholds, 6.4mm Low Flat Thresholds and their Traction Tread™ Thresholds which have various infill’s to aid grip. A copy of the test report is available upon request.

For those customers who have been with us since the start, it will be hard to believe where the years have gone. The company was established in 1997 by Ken Drake, Rod Lovatt and Mike Quinn with Mandy Greaves and Mark Lockley joining shortly after. The business has grown in a measured way every year since then and now has 30 staff. Initially the company only sold the Zero International range of thresholds, frame seals and dropseals but the range has expanded over the years to include most hardware that is fitted to doors. The ZEROplus range now includes vision frames, louvres, finger protection, door stays, flush bolts and a lot more besides. “I would like to thank all the customers who have been loyal to us over the years and in most instances, grown their businesses in line with ours”, said Ken Drake. Ken is still MD and Caleb Kent who recently joined us was born in the year the business started!

Zero is pleased to announce it is now stocking Secustrip anti-jemmy strips. “We are very excited about the Secustrip product. It features two interlocking steel profiles which are fitted to the outside of the door and the side of the door frame, and fit together when the door is closed, protecting the gap between the door and frame against intrusion” said Sales Director Mark Lockley. “They are ingeniously designed to make forced entry by jemmy, crowbar or screw driver more difficult at the leading edge of the door where the lock is fitted.” This proven product is available from Stafford stock in two designs; Type 2 for inward opening doors and Type 3 for outward opening doors. They can be cut to size on site to suit the door height. The strips are made from zinc plated mild steel and are epoxy powder coated white (RAL9010) or brown (RAL8014). They can be used on new build or retrofit projects and are ideal for use on doors where security has already been compromised and a damaged door edge needs to be concealed. For further information please contact us.
