Ken Drake, one of the original founders of Zero Seal Systems, has retired. Starting Zero back in 1997, Ken had already amassed over 16 years in the door hardware industry. Starting out at Alfred G. Roberts (Exports) Ltd in 1981, Ken remained with Laidlaw Thomson until 1997 working in London, Hong Kong, Bristol, Mitcham, Rochester, Cheadle and Willenhall. MD Mandy Greaves commented “Ken’s drive, passion and enthusiasm have been truly remarkable over the last 21 years, and he has obviously been instrumental in the success of the business. He will be sorely missed by all his colleagues here at Zero, and we hope you join us in wishing Ken and his wife Helen many years of happy retirement, and travelling!”

We at Zero Seal Systems are delighted to announce we have recently achieved ISO 9001:2015. The 2015 revision of ISO 9001 is less prescriptive than its predecessor, focusing instead on performance. This was achieved by combining the process approach with risk-based thinking, and employing the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle at all levels in the organisation. ISO 9001 is the world’s most recognised quality management standard and helps us manage quality across all our operations by means of a Quality Management System (QMS). Jim Craik, Zero’s QMS manager, says “ISO 9001 has been a huge benefit to our business since we originally achieved accreditation back in February 2015, both internally by assisting our existing systems and externally by providing a managed QMS system our customers can see. We were really keen to meet the requirements of the 2015 revision as we believe the new risk based thinking approach will further enhance our all-round service levels”. Although it wasn’t required for us to achieve the 2015 version of ISO 9001 until September 2018, we have been working on achieving this revision for the last year to be able to achieve it as early as possible. If you require further information regarding our ISO 9001 QMS policy, please give Jim a call on 01785 282910 or via our contact form.

Zero is celebrating its 20 year anniversary this year. For those customers who have been with us since the start, it will be hard to believe where the years have gone. The company was established in 1997 by Ken Drake, Rod Lovatt and Mike Quinn with Mandy Greaves and Mark Lockley joining shortly after. The business has grown in a measured way every year since then and now has 30 staff. Initially the company only sold the Zero International range of thresholds, frame seals and dropseals but the range has expanded over the years to include most hardware that is fitted to doors. The ZEROplus range now includes vision frames, louvres, finger protection, door stays, flush bolts and a lot more besides. “I would like to thank all the customers who have been loyal to us over the years and in most instances, grown their businesses in line with ours”, said Ken Drake. Ken is still MD and Caleb Kent who recently joined us was born in the year the business started!

The CORNI Ministar and Minipad ranges have now successfully completed the very high resistance 240 hours salt spray test. This means the sixth digit of their CE marking changes from Grade 3 (96 hours) to Grade 4 (240 hours). Both products are supplied with stainless steel side latches and Pullman latches as standard. New Certificates of Conformity and Declarations of Performance are available on our website. The CORNI Ministar 429 range was introduced by Zero in 2014 to replace the MAB EXIT 1000 range. It has the same functions and a very similar appearance but with many design improvements. This tried and tested product still uses the same modular approach to components as the MAB EXIT 1000 Series but Pullman latch bolts are now made from stainless steel and the rods come with steel covers as standard. The CORNI Ministar 429 is fully tested to the European standard EN 1125: 2008 on panic exit devices, is CE marked, and is suitable for use on fire rated doors.

Zero Seal Systems Ltd has recently completed a phase of increasing the mezzanine storage area in it’s warehouse. With the increasing demand to meet customers’ delivery requirements, extra storage for stock was required. Gavin Hogan commented “We are working in an increasing next day delivery industry, which obviously means we need sufficient stocks of the ZEROplus range to meet this. We have had the mezzanine in the warehouse since we moved back in 2011, but decided that it should be extended across the warehouse to give us that much needed extra storage. This now really gives us the confidence that we will continue to meet our customers’ demands in the future, as we would like to think we have always done in the past”. Service is very important to Zero, so the new extra storage space will enable them to uphold their excellent reputation.

Our sister company and main manufacturing plant, Zero International in The Bronx, N.Y., recently announced that its acoustical gasketing played a key role in the advanced sound control engineering for Studio 360, a 5.1 mix studio located in Caracas, Venezuela, that recently earned Dolby certification. Structural door design by acoustical consultant José Miguel Herrera integrated Zero's adjustable head-and-jamb gasketing 170AA, rabbeted threshold 564A and surface-mounted automatic door bottom 361AA, along with continuous hinge system 910 to achieve STC-55 performance. The opening of Studio 360 is credited with streamlining post-production audio for local filmmakers along with eliminating the time and travel costs of using facilities in neighbouring countries. The studio's audio performance exceeds international Dolby standards. Zero's acoustical gasketing systems are designed to provide a complete, uninterrupted and air-tight seal around head, jambs and threshold, which is critical to achieving highest STC performance required for sound studios and other demanding applications. They also provide adjusting features to easily restore sound-tight seals eliminating any gaps caused by door misalignment, which often occur over time as buildings shift and settle and doors cycle through changes in temperature and humidity. For further information on Zero Soundtrap systems, please contact us.
