Retirement is often bittersweet: a happy occasion for the retiree, but tinged with sadness for their colleagues. Zero waved goodbye to Martyn Greves on 20 November 2011. At a party organised by his colleagues to mark the occasion, Martyn reminisced about his years in the business…
48 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY
Way back in 1963, Martyn joined Parker Winder & Achurch in Birmingham as a management trainee, and passed his GAI diploma in 1967. Ten years later he moved on, to KS Neale in Erdington as an estimator, where he rose through the ranks to become general manager. After the acquisition by Laidlaw Thomson in the late 80s, he made the move to Bristol; but the Midlands called him back, and he later moved to Thomas Laidlaw Midlands in Willenhall, staying with them for 24 years in total.
ZERO TO RETIREMENT
Martyn joined Zero in 2002 and has been a key part of the business’s development for the last nine years. “It will be impossible to replace Martyn,” said MD Ken Drake. “His industry knowledge is immense after 48 years. He will be a hard act to follow.”
“Squire”, as he is fondly known by Zero staff, was last spotted heading in the direction of his allotment carrying gardening books, plants and implements… Splendid plans for a retirement!
